The origin of the name San Carlos appears lost in the mists of time. It has one of three sources, the first ship to sail into San Francisco Bay, King Charles III of Spain or the Feast of St. Charles. Though the first American moved into the area in 1854, early attempts to develop a town were not very successful.

It wasn’t until the early 1900s that the town started to grow in earnest with the start of a school in 1918 and a hangar and airfield in 1919. The first firehouse was constructed in 1923. By 1925, the citizens of San Carlos had voted to incorporate the city. In the 1940s the first big electronic plants were established. Today San Carlos is home to nearly 30,000 people and electronics remains an important industry.
