Once part of Mexico, Orinda is named after the 17^th century Englishwoman known as “The Matchless Orinda”.  The land was once owned by the county sheriff, William Walker Cameron whose wife loved Katherine Phillips’ poetry. Phillips was the Matchless Orinda and the Cameron’s called their home Orinda Park, in her honor.

Orinda slowly developed into a full-blown town and was incorporated as a city in 1985. The Caldecott Tunnel has ensured easy access to Oakland and San Francisco since it was built in 1937.

Yet Orinda enjoys a rural atmosphere with clean air and hiking trails that meander through the countryside. Here residents enjoy views of rolling hills peppered with ancient oaks along with a vibrant social and cultural life.
