In Spanish, Los Gatos means “The Cats”. The 1839 land grant for the area now known as Los Gatos, referred to it as “The Corner of the Cats”. The name referenced the cougars and bobcats that once roamed here.

Located in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Los Gatos (population 33,529) is part of Silicon Valley. It was founded in the 1850s when the local flour mill was built. Incorporated in 1887, the town flourished. First in the logging industry and later in fruit farming.

1920’s Los Gatos attracted many famous artists, musicians, and writers. Its famed residents include violinist Yehudi Menuhin, actress, Olivia de Havilland, and author, John Steinbeck.
