Useful Information for Alameda CA
An island in San Francisco Bay, Alameda started off as a peninsula attached to Oakland. A large part of the peninsula was forested, forming one of the world’s largest oak forests. This is the origin of the name. In Spanish Alameda means “tree-lined path”. The island city is more than twice its original size as land has been reclaimed mostly by using sand dredged from the estuary.
In the early 20th century, Alameda became famous for the enormous water and game park known Neptune Beach. It was a huge attraction, featuring an Olympic swimming pool and an enormous roller coaster. The park closed in 1939, partly as a result of the depression and partly because more people used their cars to find adventures further afield.
